Different Types of DVDs A DVD-- Digital Versatile/Video Disc is an optical storage technology used to store huge amounts of data, and high quality video, audio or games. This format has been around for only about ten years and it has evolved so fast since after its launch. DVD technology has surpassed the VHS and CD technology. A DVD has three main application formats: DVD Audio, DVD Video and DVD-ROM (for data), which are the exact counterparts for Audion CDs, VCDs, and CD-ROMs DVDs have five recordable versions, the DVD-R for General, DVD-R for Authoring (both being DVD versions of CD-R), DVD-RW (a DVD version of CD-RW), DVD-RAM, and DVD+RW. None of these formats are fully compatible with the other but there are drives in the market that will enable them to be read. DVD-R for General, DVD-R for Authoring and DVD-RW formats can be read in most DVD video players and standard DVD-ROM drives.
DVD-R
DVD+RWsDVD-R stands for DVD-Recordable. DVD-R discs are recordable only once. The DVD-R format. You can store data (DVD-ROM) and DVD-Video on a single DVD-R disc. DVD-R discs are usually available in a standard capacity, i.e., 4.7GB capacity of store-bought, pre-recorded DVDs. You can also find double-sided, single-layer DVD-R that have the ability to store about 8.75GB. DVD-R discs from home computers are usually compatible with most stand alone DVD players. DVD-R is a physical technology which is distinct from DVD-ROM, an application format. The DVD Forum, an industry association of DVDs led by Toshiba support. It is a forum that sets the standards for DVDs. A DVD+RW is the latest format for DVDs, but it is not supported by the DVD Forum. It is however supported by some of the largest computer and electronics manufacturers, and they are likely to be seen to be in the market for a longer time. Philips use DVD+RWs in its DVD video recorders. Even if DVD Forum does not authorize the use of DVD+RWs, they are noted to be compatible with more DVD video players than DVD-Rs are. DVD+RW writers may be found in PCs from select manufacturers. DVD-RWs A DVD-RW disc is a rewritable optical disc that has equal storage capacity as a DVD-R, typically 4.7 GB. The format was developed by Pioneer in November 1999, and as opposed to DVD+RW, it got the approval of the DVD Forum. A small Mini DVD-RW with diameter of 8 cm can hold 1.46 GB. A DVD-RW can erase and rewrite to a DVD-RW disc, unlike a DVD-R. A DVD-RW can rewrite to as much as 1,000 times before it is replaced. They are normally used for volatile data like back ups or a collection of files. DVD-RW discs are commonly used for volatile data, such as backups or collections of files. They are also increasingly used for home DVD video recorders. One benefit to using a rewritable disc is if there are writing errors when recording data, the disc is not ruined and can still store data by erasing the faulty data.
